Why is civil disobedience OK for health care but not a war?
Q. Radio talk show host LauraI Ingrahamam called for "civil disobedience" and "conscientious objection" to the health care reform bill and said that going to jail for not being insured would be"honorable". Yet, her call screenerer laughed when I called to ask what she thought of conscientious objectors who were jailed when they refused to be drafted and go to the Vietnam war.

A. Best known 20th century examples were Prohibition (people who didn't normally drink started drinking in protest) and the burning of draft cards in the late 1960s and early '70s. The defeat of Prohibition showed that civil disobedience worked. Come to think of it, it was the repeated and constant civil demonstrations against Viet Nam that got us out of there so it worked then, too. Oh, and civil disobedience got India its freedom from Great Britiain. (See Gandhi) Oh, and civil disobedience toppled the communist government in Poland. (See Lech Walesa and Solidarity) The next example we might have of civil disobedience working could be when all the uninsured Americans strike for health care. That is coming. Who said civil… [cont.]

A. Keep in mind, civil = non-violent in the use of the word there. The only reason I could see it being not morally justified was if it was a reaction against the moral status quo. Galileo vs the Church could probably be used as an example..albeit it's a stretch.

A. Sounds to me like it would be easier arguing why it wouldn't work. You seem to haven't gotten the harder arguement. Well, for one those who were against peaceful civil disobedience would be seen as the bad guys and popular opinion would rise against them giving those protesting peacefully more power. People respond differently when they are told to attack peaceful protesting groups then when they are told to attack say a group of soldiers or rebels. Human compassion and guilt being the allies of those who advocate peaceful disobedience. However I could argue right back that if the media was controlled by your enemy and if they made you out as bad guys, the public opinion would no longer be on your side and you would have almost no… [cont.]

The refusal to do so in the story of Moses was about the women going against orders of the government (Pharaoh) and disobeying him because his orders were unjust. Q. Do you think civil disobedience is acceptable in a democratic government? When and why?
Asked by firecrackerjt - Fri Dec 7 12:34:01 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Civil disobedience is absolutely necessary to maintain a public voice against the corruption of power. It has been used throughout history as a means of bringing public attention to abuses of civil rights and liberties. Ironically, in many cases the only way to attain/maintain the right of civil disobedience is to practice civil disobedience. Read Thoreau's Civil Disobedience and Life Without Principles. In response to the Chief, I'm willing to bet an awful lot of people "looked stupid" to others when they protested against the abuses of the British in India, the Nazi's in Germany, or the Jim Crow laws in the U.S. Of course, they were right, and they were often killed for their disobedience, so "looking stupid" wasn't their only… [cont.]

A. Excessive use of civil disobedience for every perceived injustice produces worse inequities (e.g., tax evasion by those who feel taxes are too high, resulting the the tax burden being shifted to others) or endangers others (e.g., driving through red lights because the government makes it take too long to turn green) or both (e.g., if you feel we should have universal health coverage so you do not pay your hospital bill, the hospital goes bankrupt and closes, no one else can get treatment, etc.).

A. Civil Disobeidence is about resisting government in a nonviolent way. Many famous figures such as Martin Luther King and Ghandi have read this essay and were inspired and use his ideas. Thoreau believes that the best kind of goverenment is the one that governs the least, and that people should have more power. Basically, he believes that government gets in the way. Its corrupt, and turns men into robots with no conscience. He argues that no one should be forced by the government in any way. No one should follow the crowd, they should stand up for what THEY believe is right.(instead of might makes right (majority over right) right makes might.) He believes the only purpose of government is to make people believe they have some sort… [cont.]
