David Émile Durkheim (French pronunciation: [emil dyʁkɛm]) (April 15, 1858 – November 15, 1917) was a French sociologist. He formally established the academic discipline and, with Karl Marx and Max Weber, is commonly cited as the principal architect of modern social science. Durkheim set up the first European department of sociology at the University of Bordeaux in 1895, publishing his Rules of the Sociological Method. In 1896, he established the journal L'Année Sociologique. Durkheim's seminal monograph, Suicide (1897), a case study of suicide rates amongst Catholic and Protestant populations, distinguished sociological analysis from psychology or political philosophy. Durkheim refined the sociological positivism originally set forth by Auguste Comte, promoting epistemological realism and the hypothetico-deductive methodology in social research. For him, sociology was the science of "social facts": "A social fact is every way of acting, fixed or not, capable of exercising on the individual an external constraint; or again, every way of acting which is general throughout a given society, while at the same time existing in its own right independent of its individual manifestations." Durkheim acknowledged in detail the limitations of sociology, emphasising the necessity in social science to form theoretical concepts in the abstract: "Science cannot describe individuals, but only types. If human societies cannot be classified, they must remain inaccessible to scientific description." Also influential in anthropology, Durkheim was as a structural functionalist and an early proponent of solidarism. He remained a dominant force in French intellectual life until his death in 1917, presenting numerous lectures and published works on a variety of topics, including social stratification, religion, law, education, and deviance. Durkheimian terms such as "collective conscience" have since entered the popular discourse. From Wikipedia under the

Durkheim believed that we can study sociology like a science All we have to do is study social aspects, which are institutions (ie education, religion, class, economy) or issues (ie abortion) that affect each of us individually. So, science studies nature, and sociology studies social aspects. Furthermore, these social institutions provide social constrains on our behavior (ie if your family is vegetarian, u will likely be vegetarian). He also believed that our society is like a human body. Each institution works together to help society function as a whole. If one institution breaks down, then society faces disorder. For example, if the economy is not doing well, then this… [cont.] Answered by bebeeangeldust - Fri Oct 13 21:16:43 2006 What does Emile Durkheim mean by crime is normal? Q. Discussing the article "The Normality of Crime" by Emile Durkheim Asked by aabsaphire - Thu Nov 16 20:00:25 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Durkheim presnted the theory that society was in a state of normlessness. Normal is only an average of all actions, therefore crime is as necessary as sainthood to provide a definition of normal. Probably one of the most interesting things to me about Durkheim are his ideas in regards to solidarity and how normative expectations are formed within our society. The bonds that not only connect society but also guide us as individuals within society to behave the way we do based on our internalization of norms. I cannot even count how many times I have heard someone say, Oh, they were a loner and outcast of society and were doomed from the start ., but I think people neglect to see that integration is not the fix all. There IS such a thing as TOO much integration as well as TOO little (as seen in his suicide studies). With most things in society...you must find balance.
